Lucy Liu has been cast in a lead role in the upcoming CBS All Access dramedy series “Why Women Kill,” Variety has learned.
The series details the lives of three women living in three different decades: a housewife in the ‘60s, a socialite in the ‘80s and a lawyer in 2018, each dealing with infidelity in their marriages.
Liu will star as Simone. Described as elegant, stylish, effervescent, Simone is the picture of urbane confidence, moving through the world as if it were a delightful movie starring herself. Smugly superior, a woman for whom appearances mean everything, she thrives on shopping and throwing parties, seemingly happily married to her indulgent husband, Karl, who thinks she is simply fabulous. However, despite nagging premonitions, Simone is devastated, her world upended, when she learns that Karl has been cheating on her.
The casting keeps Liu in the CBS fold. She currently stars in the CBS broadcast drama “Elementary,” which is set to end after seven seasons. Her other TV roles include “Southland,” “Difficult People,” and “Ally McBeal.” On the feature side, Liu recently starred in the Netflix film “Set It Up.” Other film roles include “The Man with the Iron Fists,” the “Charlie’s Angels” franchise, and “Kill Bill.”

Liu has also become active as a director in recent years, helming multiple episodes of “Elementary” as well as “Luke Cage” and “Graceland.”

“Why Women Kill” is produced by Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios. Marc Cherry created the series and will serve as an executive producer alongside Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo, Acme Productions’ Michael Hanel, and Mindy Schultheis. Marc Webb will also executive produce and direct.
