Vranduk fortress represents the first part of our medieval story.
To this day this walled medieval village is still inhabited. With the newly completed restoration almost complete, Vranduk has become one of Bosnia best preserved medieval fortress. The town and fortress Vranduk for centuries resisted all sorts of enemies, disasters, whether human or natural, but it almost always skillfully persisted living up to it s name as the ‘Gate of Bosnia’. And the name in itself – Vranduk, which is assumed to be derived from the word branduk (to defend), speaks about the role that it played in the history of Bosnia.
Old fortress in Tesanj, the biggest one in country, is a national treasure, heritage and historical monument. The foundation of this fortification was started even before the Romans conquered the region. Exact dates of construction are unknown. It was later enhanced by the Romans, Slavs and the Ottoman forces. It has been primarily a defensive fortification. Tešanj Castle is one of the most significant and biggest castles in Bosnia and during the Ottoman period the castle held a permanent army.
