5. Modern Education
As British took administration they wanted clerks too
maintain records.
Indians did not know English.
Appointing people from Britian for less salary was
impossible.
Hence they wanted Indians to learn English.
6. First Institutions set up
THE CALCUTTA MADRASA was set up by WARREN
HASTINGS 1781- for Muslim education.
7. SANSKRIT COLLEGE
BANARAS SANSKRIT COLLEGE was establish by
JONATHAN DUNCAN – 1791- for the study of Hindu
law and philosophy.
8. Oreintalist
Wanted to spread Oriental education.
Vernacular language learning was important as Hindu
and Muslim laws were needed for Judicial purposes.
Orientalist were concerned about regional studies.
9. Anglicists
Knowledge of Western learning and English was
essential.
Bengalis set up Calcutta Hindu college in 1817 for
English education.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy forced the British to promote
Indian education for the welfare of the country.
10. Lord Macaulay
The controversy between Orientalist and Anglicist was
settled by Macaulay’s Minute.
11. Charter Act of 1833
Charter Act of 1813 - A sum of Rs 1,00,000 was
sanctioned for the development of education in India.
Charter Act of 1833 - A sum of Rs 10,00,000 was
sanctioned
14. Aim - Wood’s Despatch
To raise the intellectual and mental standard of
Indians.
To introduce western education and science.
To develop character and morality through western
system.
To produce proper able workers for East India
company.
15. Curriculum of Education
Oriental language and literature.
Emphasis on Western knowledge and science.
Limited access to religious education.
16. Medium of instruction
Native language and English as the medium of
education.
English to be medium of higher education.
Education department was set up at all provinces.
Bombay , Madras and Calcutta universities were
opened.
17. Changes which took place
Every district – one government school was opened.
Aided schools were opened.
18. National education
Many Indians were educated in English medium.
This stirred nationalistic spirit in the minds of
educated Indians.
Swadeshi and Boycott movement started.
19. National council of education
National council of education was proposed on 16th
Nov 1905, be eminent Bengalis –Rabindranath Tagore ,
Aurobindo Ghosh , Raja Subodh Chandra Mallick ,
Brajendra Kishore Roy Choudhary.
23. National university in Bengal
Raja Subodh Chandra Mallick pledged 1,00,000 RS for
National university in Bengal - now Jadavpur
University.
Rashbihari Ghosh was appointed first President of this
university.
