Lonicera sempervirens (Trumpet Honeysuckle) is a medium-sized, twining semi-evergreen climber with masses of scarlet tubular flowers, 2 in. long (5 cm), that open to reveal bright yellow throats. Produced in succession from early spring to early summer, they are borne in whorled clusters at the tips of the stems. They eventually give way to small, bright red berries in late summer to early fall, which are ornamentally attractive but devoured by hungry birds. Magnets for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, the cheerful blossoms contrast nicely with the foliage of ovate to oblong, smooth, glossy, blue-green leaves. Although not fragrant, this honeysuckle is still a lovely garden plant and is reported to be one of the showiest of the vining honeysuckles. It will happily cover walls, fences, or pergolas for a pretty floral display. This vine is evergreen in the warm winter climates.
